Mountain Men & the Fur Trade

 Part I: Starting Your Business

1. Break up into groups of your choice and begin with a name for your business. (I recommend that you choose people who are willing to do the work; whether they are your closest friends or not. This is a project that requires you to work diligently and as a team. If you choose to work with people who you are bound to goof off with in your group, I suggest you think again if you want your work done in a timely manner.)

2.Begin to start researching  the fur trade and what was it about. Also try to start researching about the importance of the Mountain Men during this time. (SEE Beneficial Links)

3. After one week of collecting information try to finish your blueprints for your business. Your teacher will collect them to see if you have any problems with your business that could be fixed before hand. If there are no problems, you can go one to Part II.

Part II: Your Map

1. For this map, you will need to have a written or printed out picture of the entire United States.

2. With any art materials desired you are to show what type of game inhabited parts of the United States (beaver, deer, elk, buffalo, etc).

*On your map key you should have the different color legends for each of the animals. What you should also include is how much of the country was inhabited by Native Americans, Americans, British, French, Mountain Men, and how much land was wild. Don't forget to include the different land features of the entire country.*

Part III: Your Powerpoint Presentation

1. You are to provide a powerpoint presentation on the life of the Mountain Men and their role in the Fur Trade. This includes what type of food they ate, the clothes they wore, anything that has to deal with the way the lived (Powerpoint should have a minimum of 7 slides; including your works cited).

Do a very good job on this part especially. This presentation will help you when it comes time for you to present your work to the class. How hard you tried and how much effort that was put into the project overall will be reflected on how well the powerpoint is. Not only is it a part of you project overall, but it is what will be considered when it comes time for your final grade.

Part IV: Your Report

1. First and foremost, you have to start researching the types of game hunted as part of the fur trade. Be aware of misinformation, and write down any websites that you had found helpful since this will help you build your works cited.

2. Your report should be at least 5 paragraphs minimum, with 5 sentences or more to a parargraph. The report should have an introduction and a conclusion, as well as a body of 3 paragraphs or more.

3. The report can be either typed or hand-written. IF HAND-WRITTEN: Write in black or blue ink with your choice of writing in script or in print. If you choose to hand-write your report, I recommend that you pick a hand that is your neatest. IF TYPED: If typing, your font should be Times New Roman with a font size no larger than 12. Must also include pictures.

Part V: Your Budget Sheet

1. To make your budget sheet, you are to go on to Excel and start from there.

2. Your budget should have, but is not limited to: tools traps, sshipping, manufacturing, and employee salaries.

3. Before this stage in your project, here are some questions you should ask yourself: How big will business be? Depending on what fur I choose to specialize in, how much will I invest in it? Is my business located in an environment where this fur is abundant? If so, how will it affect my sales? Most importantly, how much will I sell, and how much will I pay to the Mountain Men for their hard work?

Remember to discuss this as a group before you go on any further and start your budget. Your earnings should be at least 10% of how much you start with; which is $1,000. If you can't meet that goal, you would have to make some adjustments or start the sheet all over.
